The renewed license comes with key obligations aimed at benefiting the local population. MTN South Sudan expressed its commitment to enhancing network services, stating that this long-term agreement will enable the company to invest strategically in the infrastructure and technologies necessary to shape the future of connectivity in South Sudan. The operator aims to achieve 90% population coverage within the first ten years of the license.
This expansion is poised to bring MTN's services closer to an estimated 12.1 million people, addressing the needs of the approximately 35% of the population that remained uncovered by the 2G mobile network in 2023. According to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), coverage for 3G and 4G services was notably low, with only 18% and 15% of the population covered by these technologies, respectively.
