Ivory Coast to gain 240 new radio micro-sites

24 February 2025

Orange, MTN and Moov Africa have committed to deploying approximately 240 radio micro-sites across the Ivory Coast to improve national network coverage.

The project results from the conversion of financial penalties imposed on operators for failure to meet their quality of service obligations in 2021 on the initiative of ARTCI. Orange was fined 7 billion CFA francs, compared to 3.27 billion CFA francs for MTN and 2.9 billion CFA francs for Moov Africa.

The move comes as the Ivorian government plans to connect 240 villages in 2025 as part of the second phase of the National Rural Connectivity Program (PNCR).

The 4G network covered 91.5% of the Ivorian population in 2023 according to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). 2G and 3G covered 98.7% and 98.1% respectively of the population estimated at around 31.2 million by the World Bank. However, the Global Association of Mobile Phone Operators (GSMA) gave Côte d'Ivoire a score of 85.2% for network coverage according to its Mobile Connectivity Index 2024.
