Ethiopia, Djibouti and Sudan plan fibre interconnect

05 December 2024

Three African nations - Ethiopia, Djibouti and Sudan - are planning to interconnect through terrestrial optical fibre under a project called Horizon Fiber Initiative.

A memorandum of understanding was signed between Ethio Telecom, Djibouti Telecom and Sudatel. The three parties hope to implement the ‘multi-terabyte, redundant and robust’ infrastructure as early as April 2025.

“This initiative leverages the combined infrastructure and technical expertise of Ethio Telecom, Djibouti Telecom and Sudatel Telecom Group to create an efficient and seamless data transmission network. It will enable businesses and individuals to benefit from improved communication capabilities, reduced latency and increased access to broadband services,” said Ethio Telecom said in a statement.

The signing of this MoU comes about six months after Sudatel, Ethio Telecom and Djibouti Telecom established a technical team for the implementation of the project. The team conducted an in-depth feasibility study, identified current challenges and made concrete recommendations for the advancement of the project.
