Starlink comes to Niger

26 November 2024

Niger’s National Council for the Safeguarding of the Homeland (CNSP) has granted an operating license to Starlink.

"The Regulatory Authority for Electronic Communications and Postal Services (ARCEP) recommends granting the requested license to Starlink Niger Sarlu. Starlink Niger Sarlu undertakes, in accordance with the texts governing electronic communications, to comply with the clauses of the specifications which include, among other things, the obligation to provide services in the event of natural disasters and the payment of financial compensation," said the minutes of the Council of Ministers.

The license was granted a few weeks after the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Sidi Mohamed Raliou, Niger’s Minister of Communication, Posts and Digital Economy, and Ryan GoodNight, Starlink’s Senior Director of Market Access.

With its 6,500 satellites in low Earth orbit, Starlink will help provide internet access to Niger's population, estimated at 26.3 million inhabitants according to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INS), relayed by the telecoms regulator.
