Mauritius Telecom (MT) has responded to concerns raised on social media about data protection and accusations of privacy violations. The company assures the public that it does not intercept, monitor, record or manipulate any communications of its customers.
The operator emphasized that the confidentiality of exchanges is strictly regulated by law and that it rigorously respects the right to privacy of its users.
“Mauritius Telecom operates under strict legal and regulatory frameworks among other obligations and responsibilities. As an organization committed to the highest ethical standards, Mauritius Telecom respects the principles of integrity and transparency in all its operations,” said MT in a statement.
Several weeks ago, an audio recording containing a conversation that allegedly involves Sherry Singh, former MD of MT, was posted on social media. In this conversation, the former MD is heard claiming to have recordings of discussions involving high-ranking officials in the country and wants to use them for manipulation purposes. This recording has made the population question the integrity of communications on the mobile network. The Ministry of Information Technology, Communication and Innovation of Mauritius also made a statement on 19 September to warn against listening to or recording phone calls without the consent of the parties concerned and any manipulation and dissemination of such illegally obtained data.
An investigation has already been initiated by the police, and Mauritius Telecom reports that it is committed to taking all necessary measures to protect its reputation and strengthen public confidence.
