Hotspot opts for solar to power towers

29 August 2024

Hotspot Network Limited will use solar energy to power its telecoms towers in the country, particularly in rural areas.

A partnership agreement was signed with off-grid solar solutions provider Solarkiosk Solutions GmbH. The partnership comes about two months after Hotspot signed a deal with national satellite operator NIGCOMSAT to connect rural and remote areas that traditionally lack access to the internet.

Solar energy is expected to improve the availability of telecom services in rural areas where access to the electricity grid is often limited or non-existent. It is also expected to reduce operational costs at a time when Nigerian telecom operators are complaining about the high cost of diesel, which is used as an alternative to electricity.
