Internet cut off in Mauritania

04 July 2024

The mobile internet network has been cut off in Mauritania since the evening of 1 July following the protests that followed the announcement of the provisional final results of the presidential election that returned the outgoing president Mohamed Ould Ghazouani to power for a second five-year term.

The internet outage is expected to affect Mauritania's 2.19 million internet subscribers as of early 2024. Network disruptions may also be due to technical issues, such as recurring incidents that often occur on the only undersea cable to which Mauritania is connected.

The internet was previously cut off in Mauritania in June 2019 following a presidential election that saw Mr Ghazouani win his first term in office. Mobile data was also cut off in March 2023 after a prison break in the capital Nouakchott.
