Infratel Africa expands through rural Nigeria via satellite

Infratel Africa has signed a partnership agreement with Nigerian Communications Satellite Ltd (NigComSat) to improve its connectivity services in rural Nigeria.

The Nigerian national satellite operator will provide connectivity to Infratel Africa's rural infrastructure project by migrating 100 sites to the Ka-band platform of the NigComSat-1R satellite.

“This partnership is expected to have a significant impact on Nigeria's digital economy, supporting the government's efforts to bridge the digital divide and improve connectivity in rural areas,” said Jane Egerton-Idehen, managing director of NigComSat.

The partnership aligns with Infratel Africa’s ambition to connect unserved and underserved communities across the continental digital landscape. The company is present in Nigeria, Uganda, Ghana, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Cameroon and Zimbabwe. Aware of the limits of terrestrial networks, it has entered into partnerships with satellite operators such as ClearBlue, Yahsat, iSAT Africa, Eutelsat.

The initiative should help improve the access of Nigerian populations to telecoms services, even in rural areas that are sometimes difficult to access for operators.
