MTN Rwanda and government partner for $15.6 4G smartphones

19 March 2024

MTN Rwanda has partnered with the government to accelerate the adoption of smartphones in the country by launching a range of 4G compatible smartphones at a unit price of 20,000 Rwandan francs.

This partnership is part of the Rwandan government's ‘ConnectRwanda 2.0’ program which aims to provide a smartphone to more than a million people by the end of 2024. The country had already collaborated with the mobile operator Airtel Rwanda to launch its own range of 4G smartphones in October 2023.

Smartphones are still not affordable for the majority of African consumers. According to advanced figures Paula Ingabire, minister of ICT and innovation of Rwanda, in October 2023, only 23% of Rwandan households own smartphones.
