Airtel Nigeria rolls out 5G

23 June 2023

Airtel Nigeria has rolled out its commercial 5G mobile network in the country, becoming the third operator to provide ultra-broadband services to Nigerian telecom consumers MTN Nigeria and Mafab Communications.

Airtel's 5G coverage is currently available in Abuja, Lagos, and Port Harcourt, but will be expanded to other regions in the future. The operator's subscribers can access the new high-speed network through a 5G router or a range of smartphones and tablets compatible with next-generation mobile technology.

The commercial launch of 5G comes about six months after Airtel Nigeria acquired its 5G license from the Nigerian Communications Authority (NCC) for $316.7 million. This investment is part of Airtel's ambition to strengthen its growth strategy in Nigeria by meeting the growing demand for broadband connectivity.

“The main benefits of 5G will be higher speeds, lower latency, large network capacity as well as improved user experience. In addition, the rollout of 5G will accelerate the availability and efficiency of fixed wireless access products across the country, contributing to Airtel Nigeria's progress in meeting the National Broadband Plan targets,” said Airtel Nigeria.
