MTN Group reports cybersecurity incident affecting customer data

28 April 2025

MTN Group has announced a cybersecurity incident that resulted in unauthorized access to the personal information of some customers across certain markets. However, the telecommunications giant confirmed that its core network operations, billing systems, and financial services infrastructure remain secure and fully functional.

An unidentified third party has claimed responsibility for the breach, specifically indicating access to certain parts of MTN’s systems. At this point, there is no evidence suggesting that customer accounts or mobile money (MoMo) wallets have been directly compromised.

In response to the incident, MTN Group swiftly activated its cybersecurity protocols, which involved notifying the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Hawks. The company is also in communication with relevant authorities in the affected countries and is collaborating closely with law enforcement agencies to support the ongoing investigations.

As part of its commitment to transparency and in line with local legal and regulatory requirements, MTN is in the process of notifying customers who may have been affected by the data breach.

To ensure their safety, customers are advised to remain vigilant and adhere to standard security practices.
