Ghana establishes committee to reduce internet costs

12 February 2025

The Ghanaian government plans to set up a committee to reduce the cost of the internet in the coming days, for its 24 million citizens, according to Minister for Digital Technology, and Innovations Samuel Nartey George.

The committee will be tasked with discussing and developing a roadmap that works for all parties involved. It will be composed of representatives from the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Energy, Finance, National Communications Authority, Public Utilities Regulatory Commission, Ghana Telecommunications Chamber, Content Creators Association.

This initiative comes at a time when Ghanaians are expressing disquiet about the prohibitive cost of internet services. Telecommunication Union state that mobile internet spending in Ghana accounts for 3.7% of gross national income per capita, compared to 12.8% for fixed internet. The organisation considers the service to be affordable when the rate does not exceed 2%. The World Association of Telephony Operators points out that the price of services remains one of the obstacles to the adoption of mobile Internet. Ghana had 24 million (70%) internet subscribers at the beginning of 2024.
