The Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) plans to auction four blocks of radio frequencies in the 3600-3800 MHz band in July 2025.
The initiative is expected to give telecom operators additional spectrum capacity to improve internet coverage and adoption across the country.
According to the TCRA, 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G networks covered 98.2%, 91%, 88%, and 20% of the Tanzanian population respectively by the end of December 2024. Geographically, these networks covered 75.1%, 73.8%, 71%, and 2.5% of the national territory.
The 3600-3800 MHz frequency band falls within the 3.5 GHz range identified by the Global Association of Mobile Phone Operators (GSMA) as essential for the deployment of high-speed and ultra-high-speed networks, including 5G.
