Ugandan authorities are planning to reduce the cost of digital devices including smartphones to boost internet access.
“The government will contribute to this cause by reducing the costs of digital devices, but we are also already on the right track in terms of digital infrastructure across the country,” said Aminah Zawedde, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology and National Guidance.
No specific details on the methods the government is considering to reduce the prices of various devices were provided. Collaborations with manufacturers and distributors to subsidize or lower prices, or tax exemptions are among the methods that could be considered.
