Subscribers to telecommunications services in Mauritius are no longer required to identify themselves to operators, as decreed by the government during the Council of Ministers.
The move also stipulates that mobile operators must delete the database of photographs of all those who have already registered their SIM cards. This is a backpedal by the authorities who had previously adopted the ‘Information and Communication Technologies (Registration of SIM) Regulations 2023’, urging people to register SIMs.
The process was initiated on the recommendation of the Commission of Inquiry on Drugs in 2018. In its report relayed by several local media, it is indicated that SIM cards used by tourists and foreign workers end up in the hands of drug traffickers and their accomplices.
