The Guinean government has formalized the acquisition of the 75% stake held by MTN Group in the telecommunications company Areeba SA, operating under the brand MTN Guinea.
This acquisition makes the Guinean State the majority shareholder of the company, with a total stake of 87.5%.
The acquisition comes after MTN Group expressed its intention to exit the Guinean telecoms market to focus on its high-potential markets on the continent. In December 2023, the company even signed a buyout agreement with the Telecel group for this purpose. However, the Guinean government had not yet given its approval for the sale, despite several meetings with the two companies.
