Liberia to cut telco service prices

30 December 2024

The Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) is planning to reduce the prices of telecom services, having asked local operators to reinstate promotions that offer additional data on popular packages.

The move follows repeated complaints from consumers about the prices and quality of telecom services provided in the country. The LTA introduced floor prices in October, where the rate for a minute of voice calls increased from L$0.0156 (about US$0.000086) to L$0.0130, and mobile data from L$0.00218 to L$0.00153 per megabyte.

However, according to 2023 data from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), one would need to spend 7.84% of monthly gross national income per capita in Liberia to access the cheapest mobile broadband plan, providing at least 2GB of monthly 3G data. For the ITU to consider mobile internet affordable in a country, it must be priced at or below 2% of monthly GNI per capita.
