Guinea and Côte d'Ivoire will interconnect their respective fibre optic networks following an agreement signed between the Ivorian Minister of Digital Transition and Digitalization, Kalil Konaté, and the Guinean Minister of Posts, Telecommunications and the Digital Economy, Rose Pola Pricemou.
"Our digital infrastructures will be interconnected in order to make our countries a little more resilient in the event of disasters. We must pool our efforts and resources to carry out our digital projects because the investments are heavy, but if each country contributes, these costs will be reduced," said Ivorian Minister Kalil Konaté.
In addition to the interconnection of fibre optic networks, an agreement was signed for broader cooperation in the areas of posts, telecommunications, and the digital economy. This includes exchanges of experiences in innovative digital services, strengthening cybersecurity, and promoting digital inclusion.
This interconnection partnership responds to the challenges of recurring disruptions to the Internet network, often caused by incidents on international links. Guinea currently has only one fibre optic connection, relying mainly on the ACE submarine cable, to which it has been connected since 2014. Côte d'Ivoire, meanwhile, is connected to six international submarine cables, according to the Submarine Cable Map platform.
