Starlink comes to Zimbabwe

11 September 2024

Starlink has launched commercial operations in Zimbabwe as part of its expansion into Africa. The company is now present in 14 African countries.

To access the service, Zimbabweans will have to pay $50 per month, in addition to $350 for the terminal. Starlink offers a second offer with a smaller hardware (Mini) at $200 and $30 monthly for the subscription.

Starlink’s launch in Zimbabwe comes about three months after the government allowed the company to operate in the country. The executive had previously banned the marketing and use of Starlink’s kit as the service has grown in popularity among Zimbabweans seeking better internet. IMC Communications, Starlink’s exclusive local partner, reported in July that more than 5,000 people were using the service illegally.

The advent of Starlink is expected to help improve internet access in Zimbabwe, according to President Emmerson Mnangagwa: “Starlink’s entry into the Zimbabwean telecoms market is expected to result in the deployment of high-speed, low-cost LEO

low-orbit satellite
internet infrastructure across the country, particularly in all rural areas.”
