Senegal may host satcoms from Hispasat

04 September 2024

Spain is considering deploying its Hispasat satellite telecommunications project in Senegal.

This topic is under discussion between Spanish Secretary of State for Trade, Amparo Lopez, and Alioune Sall, Senegalese Minister of Communication, Telecommunications and Digital Affairs.

The initiative aims to strengthen connectivity in Senegal by setting up satellite connection points, with particular attention paid to the telemedicine and digital education sectors.

According to the Ministry of Digital Affairs, this pilot project could expand to reach up to 150 connection points across the country. The Senegalese government will examine this proposal carefully, ensuring that the principles of win-win partnership and national sovereignty are respected. The Minister expressed his full availability to continue discussions on this strategic project.

A potential partnership between Senegal and Hispasat would allow the country to advance its connectivity ambitions. The government is committed to addressing the challenge of internet access across the country. Currently, the broadband internet penetration rate (3G/4G) stands at 89.56%, according to a second quarter report from the Telecommunications and Postal Regulatory Authority (ARTP).
