The Congolese government has partnered with Silicone Connect to modernise the national fibre optic network.

The first phase of the project, the South backbone, was received by Léon Juste Ibombo, minister of posts, telecommunications and the Digital Economy and was carried out in partnership with Nokia.

The modernisation consisted of upgrading the transmission technology from SDH (synchronous digital hierarchy) to DWDM (dense wavelength division multiplexing) on the overhead line between Pointe-Noire and Brazzaville. This made it possible to increase the express capacity between these two cities to 200Gb, compared to 100Gb between all intermediate localities in the departments.

The modernisation of the network should contribute to improving the quality and coverage of Internet services in a context marked by an accelerated digital transformation and an ever-increasing demand for high-speed connectivity.

"The modernisation of this critical infrastructure thus opens the way to a multitude of opportunities for businesses and start-ups, called upon to develop, innovate and remain competitive on the global market; education, with schools and universities with access to educational resources, online education; online public services, more efficient and more accessible to all citizens; citizens with an openness to the world and to the quality of life and work," said Ibombo.
