Benin hits 8.5 million unique mobile subscribers

The number of unique subscribers to mobile telephone services in Benin was 8.5 million hit on 31 December 2023, while the country had 16.3 million SIM cards.

The Regulatory Authority for Electronic Communications and Postal Services’ (ARCEP) 2023 annual activity report showed an average of two SIM cards per person and a penetration rate mobile of 67.3%.

The report also indicates that the number of SIM cards with access to mobile internet services stood at 10.9 million. However, the number of unique mobile internet subscribers is estimated at 6.9 million over the same period for a penetration rate of 55.4%.

Between 2022 and 2023, the number of SIM cards connected to the networks of MTN, Celtiis and Moov Africa increased by 12.3%, while the number of SIM cards with access to mobile internet also increased by 12.4%. Over the same period, voice traffic remained stable with 6.5 billion minutes of calls while internet traffic grew by 37.8% to stand at 280 million gigabytes.
