Ethio Telecom launches 5G in Jigjiga

05 December 2023

Ethio Telecom has launched its 5G mobile services in Jigjiga, in the Eastern region. It is the third city in the country to benefit from the company's ultra-broadband services after the capital Addis Ababa and Adama.

It was in September 2023 that Ethio Telecom officially launched 5G in Addis Ababa, one year after launching a pre-commercial phase in the capital and Adama.

Ethio Telecom stated that 5G will have a significant impact on industries such as critical services requiring real-time decisions, manufacturing plants, remote healthcare, precision agriculture, self-driving vehicles, Internet of Things (IoT), and real-time operations, making them a reality.

The expansion of the 5G network should also enable the operator to bring the latest generation of mobile technology to millions more people and meet their demand for high-speed connectivity. This will also allow the company to strengthen its leading position in the Ethiopian telecoms market where it claims 73.1 million mobile subscribers, according to its own statistics. Its competitor Safaricom Ethiopia has 5 million.
