Safaricom has signed a partnership agreement with the ICT Authority (ICTA) to train 10,000 fibre optic technicians over five years.
The ‘Connect Academy’ primarily targets students in technical and vocational training institutions in Kenya. The first cohort of 200 people is expected to start this month. They will undergo a full day of training provided by Safaricom engineers every Friday for three months.
The initiative is part of the government’s DigiTalent program. It is a public-private partnership focused on skills development, field support, mentoring, training, certification and innovation in the field of ICT.
“This academy is part of our plan to collaborate with the private sector as part of our digital transformation program. We have always maintained that as a government we cannot act alone, and that is why we have called on the private sector to come and support us and collaborate with us,” said Stanley Kamanguya, director general of the ICTA.
