As part of the agreement, Ericsson will serve as Vodafone’s exclusive RAN vendor in Ireland, the Netherlands, and Portugal, while also playing a significant role in Germany, Romania, and Egypt. This partnership deepens an already longstanding relationship, signalling Vodafone’s commitment to future-proofing its network capabilities.
The modernisation effort focuses on upgrading Vodafone’s Radio Access Network (RAN) infrastructure and management systems to support the rollout of 5G Standalone networks. This upgrade will enable Vodafone to deliver more differentiated and reliable connectivity solutions to both consumers and enterprise clients, with guaranteed performance parameters. The deployment will include Ericsson’s latest Open RAN-compatible Massive MIMO radios, RAN Compute solutions, and 5G Advanced RAN software, which will be rolled out extensively across these markets.
A key element of the deal involves integrating Ericsson’s Intelligent Automation Platform alongside a suite of AI-powered rApps designed for automated RAN optimisation, energy efficiency, and multi-vendor network management. Germany is set to be the first market to implement these AI-driven solutions, with deployment scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2025. This comprehensive AI and network evolution partnership aims to elevate Vodafone’s infrastructure standards, paving the way toward autonomous networks capable of meeting evolving technological demands.
Vodafone’s Chief Network Officer, Alberto Ripepi, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, emphasising its role in transforming the network to enhance customer experiences and operational efficiency. He highlighted the importance of automation and AI in seamlessly managing network demands in real time, as well as laying the groundwork for new revenue opportunities through network APIs via Vodafone’s joint venture, Aduna. Ripepi underscored that this collaboration will position Vodafone at the forefront of network innovation.
Ericsson’s Senior Vice President and Head of Market Area Europe, Middle East, and Africa, Patrick Johansson, also commented on the partnership, stating that it aligns with Ericsson’s vision for high-performing programmable networks. He noted that enabling innovative, performance-based solutions across consumer and enterprise segments will open new monetisation opportunities and drive the next wave of telecommunications innovation.
In addition to the hardware upgrades, Vodafone will implement Ericsson’s 5G Advanced RAN software solutions, which use AI and automation for real-time network management, operational and energy efficiencies, and improved device and network performance. This strategic move aims to foster accelerated innovation and develop new use cases across Vodafone’s markets, ensuring the company’s network remains adaptable to future technological advancements. The partnership solidifies Vodafone’s ambition to lead in the global telecommunications sector by building a future-ready, intelligent network infrastructure.
