Rural markets are increasingly attractive due to their growth potential, despite historically being overlooked because of perceived low profitability and technical challenges. These regions often feature sparse populations and difficult terrain, which elevate infrastructure costs, according to the World Association of Telephone Operators. Nevertheless, expanding services into these areas can significantly boost market share, especially as urban centres become more saturated and competitive.
Improved network coverage in KwaZulu-Natal is expected to enable residents in remote rural locations to access Vodacom’s services more easily, potentially helping the company challenge rivals like MTN and Telkom. Increased subscriber numbers could lead to higher consumption and revenue growth for Vodacom.
