The rollout began at the end of last week and is structured in four phases, in accordance with the conditions set by its spectrum license.
The initial phase, now live, covers major urban centres including Suva, Nadi, Lautoka, Denarau, Navua, Nausori, and Nasinu. The company plans to expand coverage in subsequent phases, with Phase 2 expected to be completed by mid-2024 and the remaining phases by 2027, bringing broader access across the country.
Telecom Fiji’s CEO Charles Goundar confirmed that the company has also upgraded its fibre backbone infrastructure to support the new 5G network, enhancing capacity and performance. The company obtained its 5G license from Fiji’s Ministry of Trade, Co-operatives, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, and Communications in September. Vodafone Fiji and Digicel Fiji received their licenses around the same time and launched their respective 5G services shortly afterward, both following a similar four-phase deployment plan.
A notable caveat for users in Fiji is that those with Apple or Samsung devices will need to apply software updates from the device manufacturers to enable 5G connectivity, ensuring compatibility with the new network technology.
