The introduction of Starlink in Somalia aims to significantly improve the country’s internet coverage and promote digital inclusion. According to recent statistics, Somalia had approximately 5.08 million internet users as of early 2024, translating to just 27.8% of the population, while 72.4% remained offline. The NCA emphasized that the Starlink project aligns with the objectives of the Ministry of Communications and Technology, which seeks to provide affordable and accessible internet services to all Somalis, regardless of their location.
“Starlink’s entry into Somalia represents a significant milestone in our efforts to bridge the digital divide in our country. This partnership will especially benefit individuals and institutions in rural areas, where internet access has been extremely limited,” said Mustafa Yasin Sheik, the director general of the NCA.
“This initiative aligns with our vision to deliver affordable and accessible internet services to all Somalis, regardless of where they live,” said Mohamed Mo’allim, the Minister of Communications and Technology.
Starlink expands its presence in Africa, joining a list of countries that already utilize its satellite service, including Cape Verde, Nigeria, Mozambique, Liberia, Ghana, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Rwanda, South Sudan, Burundi, Benin, Sierra Leone, Malawi, Eswatini, Angola, Chad, Togo, Tunisia, and Niger.
