As part of the upgrade, Nokia installed its 7750 Service Router (SR), which is integrated with broadband network gateway (BNG) and CG-NAT functionalities. Nokia claims this setup enables RailTel’s network to efficiently manage enterprise-grade high-speed traffic alongside internal ISP services. The upgraded infrastructure also features Nokia’s 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) and cutting-edge transponder technology, which significantly increases transport capacity while reducing the cost per bit.

The deployment introduces high-capacity Lambda transmission and express traffic lanes between major cities, resulting in improved overall network performance. Nokia highlighted that its IP routing and optical transport technologies were seamlessly integrated with RailTel’s existing infrastructure, utilizing previously unused channel spectrum. The new network architecture is designed to support a vendor-neutral, open-network approach, setting the stage for future innovations and technological advancements across RailTel’s optical footprint.

Sanjai Kumar, Chairman and Managing Director of RailTel, stated that the upgraded, unified network architecture enhances intercity traffic resilience and addresses the escalating demand for high-speed, reliable connectivity. He added that these improvements will help RailTel deliver faster, more dependable services to enterprise and broadband customers throughout India.
