The project aims to support Indonesia’s digital transformation and the government’s ‘Affordable Broadband’ initiative, which seeks to bridge the digital gap by bringing reliable connectivity to more citizens. Deployment is set to begin in December 2025.

Under this collaboration, Nokia will assist Surge in building a comprehensive 5G FWA network utilising the n50 spectrum band to deliver high-speed, low-latency broadband services. Nokia’s existing FTTx, IP, and Optics infrastructure will be leveraged for backhaul and transport, ensuring seamless integration. Nokia has also developed a customised Radio Access Network (RAN) and Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) solution tailored specifically for FWA applications, targeting areas with limited fibre connectivity.

The company will supply equipment from its energy-efficient AirScale RAN portfolio, including the latest AirScale Baseband units, Remote Radio Heads (RRH), and zero-footprint site solutions designed for broad deployment scenarios. These solutions are powered by Nokia’s ReefShark System-on-Chip technology, enhancing network performance, efficiency, and reliability.

Additionally, Surge will benefit from Nokia’s intelligent network management system, MantaRay NM, which provides a unified view for monitoring and optimising network operations. The deal also encompasses deployment, maintenance, and support services, utilising AI-driven tools to improve overall network performance, safety, and efficiency.

“This partnership with Nokia provides us with a platform to build a world-class 5G network that will bridge the digital divide and deliver affordable connectivity to even more people. Digitalisation will enable our customers to experience the best possible services,” said Shannedy Ong, Director at Surge Indonesia.

“This collaboration marks a significant milestone in delivering premium connectivity experiences and accelerating Indonesia’s digitalisation. We have combined our best-in-class technology to address Surge’s specific needs as they roll out 5G across the country,” said Mark Atkinson, Head of Radio Access Networks at Nokia.
