This initiative aims to bolster the city-state’s CCTV network used across its heavily trafficked railway system, which serves millions of passengers daily. The upgraded network will enable LTA to significantly improve the capacity, reliability, and security of its video surveillance system, which is vital for ensuring public safety, detecting illegal activities, and managing traffic flow across more than 50 stations.
The existing CCTV system plays a crucial role in real-time monitoring, and with the increasing number of cameras and data demands, LTA required a robust, scalable network infrastructure. Nokia’s fibre Optical LAN, featuring hardened ONUs and future-proof OLTs capable of supporting speeds up to 25Gb/s, has been deployed to meet these demands. Designed as a future-ready solution, Optical LAN reduces cabling requirements by up to 70% and cuts power consumption by 40% compared to traditional copper-based networks, making it an efficient and sustainable choice for expansive surveillance needs.
In addition, Nokia’s IP/MPLS technology will enable better backhaul of video data from the numerous CCTV cameras to the Operations Control Centre, where live feeds are monitored and stored. This integrated network upgrade aims to enhance the overall effectiveness and security of Singapore’s railway system.
Joaquim Santos, Vice President of Integrated Communication and Supervision Solutions at Hitachi Rail, expressed pride in collaborating with Nokia on this project, emphasizing that it continues Hitachi’s longstanding relationship with LTA. He highlighted that the upgrade will be instrumental in modernizing Singapore’s transport infrastructure and improving passenger safety.
Stuart Hendry, Vice President of Enterprise Sales at Nokia for Network Infrastructure in Asia Pacific, underscored the importance of fibre connectivity in transportation security systems worldwide. He noted that delivering a highly available, reliable, and secure real-time surveillance network is essential for safeguarding transit passengers. Hendry emphasized that Nokia’s comprehensive solution, developed in partnership with Hitachi Rail, will ensure LTA’s CCTV and broader network operations remain robust and scalable for years to come, supporting Singapore’s continued urban mobility advancements.
