Indonesian telcos form alliance to standardise security-focused Open API protocols

Under the auspices of the Joint Telco API Alliance Initiative, the three operators will implement a unified telco API protocol based on the international CAMARA standard for open network APIs. This collaboration is designed to facilitate easier, safer, and more inclusive integration between each operator’s ecosystem and various applications within Indonesia’s expanding digital landscape.

The CAMARA open APIs, supported by the GSMA Open Gateway initiative — which Telkomsel, Indosat, XL Axiata, and Smartfren joined in February 2024 — offer a standards-based approach to open APIs. However, developers have historically faced challenges in leveraging APIs across multiple operators simultaneously, limiting the scope of innovative solutions. To address this, regional initiatives such as Ericsson’s Aduna and the Bridge Alliance API Exchange (BAEx), launched in July 2024, aim to promote broader, scalable API adoption.

Initially, the alliance launched with three open gateway APIs and now plans to develop six solutions based on the open API protocol. Most of these solutions focus on strengthening security, particularly in protecting customers from account hacking and fraud. Features include checking the active status of phone numbers, verifying customer registration, device validation, location verification, and detecting suspicious SIM activities to prevent number hijacking and account takeovers. Additionally, the solutions will facilitate verification of device ownership changes and real-time analysis of network data to identify potential fraudulent transactions.

Andrijanto Muljono, XLSmart’s director and chief enterprise strategic relationship officer, expressed optimism about the collaboration’s potential to create impactful solutions and boost Indonesia’s telecommunications competitiveness in the digital era. He emphasised that the API alliance could serve as a catalyst for strategic partnerships in delivering innovative digital services and achieving technological breakthroughs across the Indonesian market.
