Ethio telecom CEO Frehiwot Tamru hosted a high-level delegation from ZTE Corporation, led by its Executive Vice President and COO, Mr. Xie Junshi. The meeting evaluated the successful progress of the landmark Network Expansion and Modernization Agreement finalised during the Mobile World Congress 2026 in Barcelona. This engagement underscores a shared vision for accelerating digital infrastructure under the company’s Next Horizon: Digital & Beyond 2028 Strategy.
As part of the end-to-end network modernisation in the ZTE circle, which encompasses 879 sites, 462 RAN modernisation sites (which include LTE layering at 180 sites, LTE upgrading at 248 sites, and a full SWAP of 102 sites), 237 MW link upgrades, and 103 IP RAN site expansions were successfully completed. On top of this, the remaining scopes of the modernisation program are under execution, which include 124 new sites, U2100 refarming at 272 sites, and 115 rural solution sites.
This rollout has significantly widened high-speed connectivity, pushing national 4G mobile population coverage to an impressive 92% in ZTE circle. These sites now serve as a robust digital backbone for the nation’s evolving economy, enhancing connectivity for millions of citizens across Ethiopia.
CEO Frehiwot Tamru expressed her sincere appreciation for the project’s successful execution, emphasising its vital contribution to achieving the Next Horizon Year One targets. The leadership commended ZTE for their innovative financing model, technical excellence, and dedication to meeting aggressive modernisation timelines.
Looking forward, the CEO underscored that the next phase of modernisation and expansion will proceed with stretched targets, calling on the ZTE team to maintain their steadfast support. Ultimately, this strategic partnership ensured network upgrades were delivered efficiently and sustainably, directly addressing the nation’s rapidly expanding demand for high-quality data services.
To bridge the digital divide, both leaders agreed to partner on innovative device financing options that expand access to affordable smartphones. Empowering consumers with accessible hardware remains a top priority to maximise the impact of the newly deployed 4G network and support a rapidly growing digital society.
Another key focus was the acceleration of Ethio telecom’s “Green Operator” initiatives. By collaborating on sustainable green energy infrastructure, both companies aim to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of telecom operations. This initiative reflects a commitment to building a resilient, eco-friendly network that aligns with global environmental standards and Ethio telecom’s sustainability goals.
Concluding the visit, the ZTE COO commended Ethio telecom’s remarkable progress and its ambitious strategy. He expressed honour in ZTE’s opportunity to work at a high scale with a leading African operator. Reaffirming their commitment, both parties pledged to continue a win-win partnership dedicated to empowering Ethiopia’s digital future and ensuring technological excellence.
