Ericsson completes successful field trial of innovative triple-band massive MIMO radio with MTN Nigeria

The innovative radio replaces multiple traditional radios with an energy-efficient system that reduces tower space, power consumption, and maintenance requirements. Ericsson highlighted that the AIR 3284 supports dynamic capacity configuration, allowing real-time adjustment of resources based on traffic demands, thereby focusing additional capacity where congestion relief is most needed.

This technology enables MTN Nigeria to optimise its network with greater flexibility and intelligence, resulting in operational efficiencies and a smaller site footprint. It also simplifies cabling and reduces energy consumption, contributing to lower operating expenses. MTN Nigeria’s CTO, Yahaya Ibrahim, reported that during the trial, the AIR 3284 delivered speeds 3.2 times higher on the downlink and approximately four times higher on the uplink, increased user throughput by over 50%, and alleviated network congestion during peak demand periods serving millions of subscribers.

Ibrahim emphasised that consolidating 4G mid-band spectrum into a single, adaptable solution has significantly reduced network complexity, enhanced operational efficiency, and provided a faster, more reliable user experience precisely where and when customers need it most. He added that this solution directly addresses the growing capacity requirements while maintaining operational agility.

Majda Lahlou Kassi, VP and head of Ericsson West and Southern Africa, noted that the AIR 3284 is also future-proof for 5G deployment, including 5G standalone networks. She explained that the radio delivers immediate, measurable capacity increases without sacrificing network performance, reduces site complexity, cuts power consumption, and enables MTN Nigeria to steer capacity dynamically to match demand in real time.
