Since beginning the rollout in December 2024, Digicel Tonga has upgraded 15 mobile sites across Nuku’alofa, spanning from Kolofoou in the east to Kolomouta in the west and Tofoa in the south.

“Almost one-third of Tonga can now access internet speeds in the hundreds of Mbps via 5G-compatible mobile devices or modems,” said Digicel Tonga CEO Daniel Horan.

Details on how many customers currently own 5G-compatible devices remain undisclosed, as Digicel Tonga — and its only rival, Tonga Communications Corporation (TCC), which launched similar services around the same time — have not revealed subscriber figures for their 5G networks.

Horan noted that the company has been “working hard” to make 5G devices accessible, with the most affordable option being a Redmi A4 priced at US$200. Other promoted devices include the Samsung Galaxy A16 (US$380) and Motorola G54 (US$500).

Digicel Tonga offers various 5G plans, ranging from US$5 per day for 3.5GB of data to US$30 per month for 24GB. Its fixed wireless 5G service is priced at US$70 per month for 70GB, with an unlimited data option available for US$200 monthly.

Horan also advised customers with Apple or Samsung 5G-compatible devices that they may need to update their device’s operating system to access the network.
