This initiative, slated for deployment this year, marks a significant milestone as the first deployment of AWS’s edge cloud technology, known as AWS Wavelength, on the African continent. Notably, these initial deployments will take place in regions that currently lack existing AWS Regions or Local Zones, which represent large and smaller-scale data centre clusters, respectively.
The core function of AWS Wavelength is to empower customers to operate applications that demand extremely low latency, or require data to be processed and stored locally for compliance with regulatory requirements. This capability is particularly vital for a range of industries, including telecommunications, finance, the public sector, and sectors heavily reliant on real-time applications such as online gaming.
