APAC 5G subscriptions to reach 4.6 billion by 2030

The industry analyst firm forecasts an annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.4%, fuelled by the increasing availability of affordable 5G devices, ongoing network rollouts across major markets, and upcoming commercial launches in countries like Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

GlobalData telecom analyst Sarwat Zeeshan highlighted that government-backed digital initiatives, enterprise digital transformation efforts, and rising demand for high-speed, low-latency connectivity are all key factors accelerating the deployment of standalone 5G networks. He explained that the need for robust networks to support applications such as smart manufacturing, autonomous mobility, and cloud gaming is propelling 5G adoption throughout the region.

Several governments, including those of Australia, China, India, South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan, have implemented national 5G strategies aimed at building strong domestic ecosystems. These frameworks typically include public sector incentives, tax benefits, industry–government collaboration, and regulatory measures designed to optimise spectrum utilisation.

China is expected to maintain its position as the world’s largest 5G market through the forecast period. GlobalData anticipates that by 2029, approximately 75% of China’s mobile subscriptions will be 5G-enabled, supported by ongoing investments and policies aimed at expanding coverage to rural regions and industrial zones. The country had deployed roughly 4.2 million 5G base stations in 2024, with that number rising to about 4.6 million by September 2025.

Operators across the Asia-Pacific are increasing their infrastructure investments, with GSMA estimating that regional telecom companies will allocate around US$254 billion toward network development through 2030, much of which will support 5G deployment. These investments are expected to generate new revenue streams through premium 5G mobile plans and enterprise services, including private 5G networks.

Zeeshan emphasised that the combination of 5G with emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, data analytics, and the Internet of Things (IoT) will enable operators to expand into vertical markets like manufacturing, mining, and healthcare. He noted that Asia-Pacific has become a global hub for advancing beyond mere 5G deployment into developing comprehensive 5G ecosystems, with South Korea, Japan, and China leading the charge — supporting their IT and manufacturing sectors and unlocking new opportunities in IoT and machine-to-machine (M2M) communications.
