The launch is part of the company’s broader strategy to strengthen its position in a competitive market alongside Orange and Yas (Telma). VoLTE promises users high-definition sound quality and the ability to make calls while simultaneously browsing the internet or using applications, all without additional charges or interruptions, thanks to their existing plans.
In a press statement, Airtel Madagascar’s local subsidiary explained that the implementation of VoLTE is aimed at improving service quality, which is a key factor in retaining existing customers and attracting new ones, according to GSMA. The company is also advancing its investment efforts by expanding 4G coverage to support network modernization. CEO Anne Catherine Tchokonté highlighted that the company is preparing to launch affordable “Smart Feature Phones,” designed to connect more Malagasy people and promote digital inclusion across the country.
This development follows Airtel Madagascar’s recent deployment of a satellite connectivity solution in March 2024, aimed at enhancing both internet quality and coverage. Tchokonté emphasized that the company is committed to providing high-speed, low-latency, and resilient connectivity services, ensuring maximum service availability and uninterrupted connection.
While specific subscriber figures for Airtel Madagascar are not publicly available, its competitors, Orange and Yas, reported having 3.5 million and 10.2 million subscribers respectively as of June 2025. In Madagascar, where the total number of mobile subscriptions is estimated at around 18.2 million by DataReportal, the introduction of VoLTE is expected to bolster Airtel’s efforts to grow its customer base and improve service quality in a rapidly evolving telecom market.
