This collaboration aims to provide network access via Starlink’s satellite system for Airtel customers with compatible smartphones in regions lacking terrestrial coverage, making it the largest 4G connectivity provider in Africa by geographic reach.

The satellite-to-mobile service is set to commence in 2026, initially supporting data for select applications and text messaging. The partnership also includes support for Starlink’s upcoming broadband Direct-to-Cell system, featuring next-generation satellites capable of delivering high-speed connectivity to smartphones with data speeds increased by 20 times. The rollout will proceed subject to country-specific regulatory approvals.

Airtel Africa is pioneering as the first mobile network operator in Africa to offer Starlink Direct-to-Cell service, utilizing a constellation of 650 satellites to ensure seamless connectivity in remote and underserved areas. The alliance underscores Airtel Africa’s commitment to bridging the digital divide and enhancing connectivity for all its customers. Both companies plan to explore further collaboration opportunities to promote digital inclusion across the continent.

“Airtel Africa remains dedicated to providing our customers with reliable and continuous mobile connectivity. Starlink’s Direct-to-Cell technology complements our existing terrestrial network and extends coverage to areas where deploying traditional infrastructure is challenging. We are excited that this collaboration will set a new standard for service availability across all our markets,” said Sunil Taldar, CEO and Managing Director of Airtel Africa.

“For the first time, people across Africa will be able to stay connected in remote regions where terrestrial coverage is limited or non-existent. We’re thrilled that Starlink Direct-to-Cell can power this life-changing connectivity. Through this partnership with Airtel Africa, we will also deliver our next-generation technology to provide faster, high-speed broadband access to millions, enabling them to reach vital services and information more quickly,” said Stephanie Bednarek, Vice President of Sales at Starlink.
